, west virginia this morning, weatherwatchers reporting it in the 50s to near 60 there. and around virginia's tide water and the lower eastern shore in the upper 60s. over the last 12 hours the storms have dissipated and a weak area of high pressure holding for us from maine down to georgia. and we'll have this dry pattern, and the excessive heat continuing tay and tomorrow. now today's record is 98. we probably won't be near that. but likely near or perhaps exceed the record tomorrow, which is at 94. and then on saturday, a dry front coming through, we'll usher in a shift in our wind. that will bring in some cooler air om the north and winds shift into the east on sunay with some clouds rolling in. small chance of a shower and much cooler. >> time to take a live look at this hour on the maryland side. capitol beltway near route four. pretty quiet, just down the road on the beltway, route 5 on the inner loop, wo offant accident where authorities are headed over right now. pop over to virginia, right now on the capital beltway, just off the springfield interchange we're okay. this i

the mountains of western maryland, west virginia and many locations are just near 60. away from the waters on the eastern shore in the upper 60s. right around virginia tide water and southeastern virginia, low 70s. and over the last 12 hours we had those evening thundershowers coming through. but have now dissipated. we have a few clouds drifting in from the rest. afternoon highs climbing into the low and mid 90s. going to be uncomfortably warm or a few hours midafternoon like yesterday. more of the same tomorrow although less humid on friday. tomorrow's record high is 94. so we may be tying it or exceeding it tomorrow afternoon. then cooler for the weekend. jerry, how's the traffic? >> doing pretty well. just a story of vome as you take a live look through vienna along interstate 66. eastbound traffic as you head on in looking good. westbound, also moving along well. no early hang-ups to report. let's hea over and take a look. elsewhere the rush hour picking up a bit of vome both ways at the american legion brie. just a little volume. no concerns,270 also moving very, very well. let's upd

. and then during the morning hours on friday, it will be east of virginia beach, perhaps right around 8:00 on friday morning. and then by noon time just east of ocean city, by 2:00 p.m. friday just off of cape may new jersey, and even though the center of circumstance hags will be off the coast, the tropical storm force winds will certainly be felt right along the atlantic beaches and then affecting new england. look at all the tropical storm watches and warnings that are up. this is a hurricane warning, this red zone around the outer banks from virginia beach all the way town through north carolina. farther to the north, this is a hurricane watch for our atlantic beaches along the shore of the -- from delaware all the way down through virginia shore line, that is a hurricane watch. and the likely effects from the storm, very wet ocean city on friday with tropical bands of heavy rain coming in. tropical storm force winds. for us this morning, we have temperatures around the region in the 70s. 77 in washington, and beef got a huge area of high pressure, so plenty of sunshine today. we'll

in the eastern sky. in the mountains, western maryland and west virginia, many locations chilly, near 50 there. high pressure over the region giving us plenty of sunshine today and a southerly breeze should warm us into the upper 80s by mid afternoon. not very humid. tomorrow, partly cloudy, midday clouds might produce a passing shower and blustery afternoon wind and cooler weather thursday and friday as the sun returns. ashley, how's the tuesday traffic now? >> i come bearing good news out of virginia. the beltway is wide open heading up towards 50 and 66. along 95, you do have company as you make your way leaving the prince william parkway towards route 1 seems to be the worse of it. this is the pace and the headlights may throw you off, they are at the posted speed limit there's a lot of drivers there. 270 southbound is starting to stack up, not terrible but definitely slow from 109 to the truck scales and after that, no problems. around the beltway, we are rolling problem free right now at the posted speed limit. no big problems there, you are flying, of course at the speed limit. craig an

, unfortunately things have gotten ugly very quickly on the beltway in virginia. live pictes of the inner loop beginning at route 50, arlington boulevard. it is at a stand still. multicar crash inner loop of the beltway just above i6. right side of the roadway and left side of the roadway are blocked. not only will i affect traffic to the beltway, it will jam things up on 66 trying to get on to or beyond 495. so heads-up for that. we'll keep you updated. southeast still dealing with the accident, pennsylvania and branch avenues. very little traff getting by at this hour. but the progresss being made. we'll keep a watch on that. out to the rails we go. met metro, vre, camden, 6 minutes behind schedule. >> thanks very much. a developing story in afghanistan. nine service members were killed in a helicopter crash. nato says two others were killed in the crash including a u.s. tizen. an official says the chopper went down in northwestern afghanistan. the cause of the crash is being investigated but nato says there were no reports of enemy fire in the area. e deaths bring the number of internationa

have temperatures in the western regions in the 50s in western maryland, west virginia. on the bay, on the eastern shore, around 60 degrees. right near the waters i's in the mid and upper 60s. he view from space showing a mostly clear sky. a few clouds producing showers in eastern kentucky. that is a little bitf a disturbance that may be drifting up into the shenandoah valley. east of the blue ridge, sunset, and metro area perhaps this evening. and otherwise we'llust have a few clouds coming through with highs near 90 today. near 90 on thursday. e'll repeat this on friday. a mini heat wave as we say good-bye to summer, hello autumn. it should cool down as we get to the weekend. saturday highs in the mid-80s. morning lows in the 60s. cooler on sunday in the next week. jerry, how is the traffic? >> doing fine sofr this morning. overnight road work has been picked up. travel lanes open. relatively light to moderate volume. that is good news. northbound movg along well. 395 to 14th street bridge, a little hard to tell this early morning. lanes are open. that's the g.w. parkway under 3

amtrak routes between virginia's tidewater area and newport news have been canceled because of the coming storm. these are live pictures from wrightsville beach, north carolina. many tourists and residents have left north carolina's outer banks. it's still unclear how close the strongest winds and heaviest surge will get to north carolina's fragile chain of barrier islands. tom is here now to tell us what he sees going on right now and some changes happening as we speak. >>> it looks like the winds are picking up at wrightsville beach. you can see the camera bouncing around, and the surf is getting rougher at wrightsville beach, north carolina. well, let's take a look across the tropical atlantic. we've got three named storms. we've got the major hurricane earl and then far to the south and east of that is a rather disorganized tropical storm, fiona. and that, though, is showing a little more organization as it moves off to the north, and that will likely stay way out to sea and not threaten the atlantic seaboard. farther to the east is gaston. it is a tropical storm and it's heading due

there. farther to the west, still in the 60s in much of western maryland. panhandle of west virginia and shenandoah valley. it seems almost wintry. these are the current dew points. they are in the 40s. this is the driest day we have had in a long time, since even about have the summer. we have dry weather all the way down to the atlantic beaches too. this continues to come in on some northwest breezes. these are the latest wind gusts. they have been around 20 to 25 miles an hour gusts. as we look at the other temperatures, out of the mountains, still in the low 60s. eastern shore, east of the bay and away from the waters, still near 70 degrees. all this coming from high pressure, which continues to move in off the great lakes. it is assisted by an area of low pressure spinning away over eastern new england and northern new england. that lull combined with this area of high pressure giving us a little bit of blustery wind. these are the remnants of tropic tropical storm hermine. this high pressure is going to hold forth for the next couple of days. some of the moisture will be along
